Arrival
There is nothing like driving cross-country to make one realize how broad and varied the US is. The drive was uneventful, which was lucky given that the steel belts of our steel belted radials were showing by the time I pulled in front of the house. Uneventful, however, makes for a boring story, so here are some of our observations from the road.
-auto focus is a difficult feature in a moving car. We wanted to take a picture of each "Welcome to..." sign along the way, but got a lot of mileposts just past the the "Welcome to..." sign.
-we have exquisite taste in music, as do our friends in Chapel Hill who made us CDs. What a pity we can't sing, or alternately, thank goodness our lack of tunefullness doesn't deter us from belting along with the songs at 85mph.
-you need to wear sunscreen, even in the car.
-there should probably be more U2 in our daily lives. Noticed when, west of Salina, Kansas, she turns to me and says, "this is good, who is it?" as we sang along to "Sunday, bloody Sunday."
-relatives are a great opportunity to practice patience and tolerance. I love them, but I would not make their choices.
-I thought I could go the whole way without washing the bugs off the windshield, but we only got as far as Twin Falls, Idaho.
-when you are traveling, diet soda and fritos are a perfectly appropriate meal.
-she's a great kid.
